GLUTEN FREE - A LOCAL COELIAC’S GUIDE

Welcome to Middleham. I live here and I am coeliac. You will be pleased to know you will not go hungry here, you can buy foods in and you can dine out. The selection is fewer than normal at present only because I have not been able to revisit some cafes/restaurants post lock-down so cannot be sure that they are offering GF again just yet.

In the meantime, you can buy GF food at:

PLACES TO SHOP >

CO-OP, LEYBURN.

Distance - 5 minute drive

Open 7 days a week

There is a selection of GF bakery, biscuits and ingredients on a dedicated section at the far end of the shop – opposite the egg stand. Also a few frozen items in the freezer aisle.

CAMPBELLS & SONS SUPERMARKET, LEYBURN

Distance - 5 minute drive

Open 7 days a week

Stocking Findlaters GF bread, which is very good especially the Tiger Bloomer, which toasts a treat, located on a separate shelf in the bread aisle. Weekly delivery is late Friday mornings, when it’s gone it’s gone. A selection of GF products and ingredients on a dedicated stand at the far end of the shop, opposite the butchery counters. Also a freezer full of GF products from The Gluten Free Kitchen, Voakes’ pies and The Pie Shop. Next to the Brymor ice cream section – most of which is also GF (but not all, so check ingredients). They have a selection of GF beers, plus wines, spirits and gins too – which are all GF.

THE GLUTEN FREE KITCHEN

Distance - 5 minute drive

A dedicated local GF food producer which also stocks some other makers. Fully certified as GF, mainly dairy free too. Some of their range is available in Campbells but you can order ahead from them online to collect on arrival by prior arrangement, provided you get there before 3pm Monday - Friday. Great individual quiches, cakes and buns, puds and scones.

Unit 4D, Leyburn Business Park, Harmby Road, Leyburn, DL8 5QA

PLACES TO EAT OUT >

WENSLEYDALE HEIFER, WEST WITTON

Distance - 1 minute walk

If you want to push the boat out, this is the place for you. Almost the entire menu can be served GF and they really understand GF, cross-contamination etc. I eat there with total confidence. Make sure you book ahead, it’s very popular.

FRIAR TUCK, LEYBURN

Distance - 5 minute drive

Will cook GF fish and chips for you whenever they are open. If there’s a queue, jump it to order and then come back in 10 minutes or phone ahead. They understand cross-contamination, are very careful and fry your fish in their separate, dedicated chip fryer.

JERVAULX ABBEY TEA ROOMS, RIPON

Distance - 6 minute drive

Visit the Abbey ruins then treat yourselves to a tea at the Tea Rooms. They don’t have a huge range of GF but there are usually a couple of nice cakes to go with your coffee, instead of watching everyone else tuck in whilst you just slurp.

Jervaulx Abbey Tea Rooms, Abbey Tearoom, Jervaulx, Ripon. HG4 4PH

BRYMOR ICE CREAM PARLOUR, HIGH JERVAULX FARM

Distance - 9 minute drive

Visit the farm where they make the ice cream. Just half a mile past Jervaulx Abbey on the A6108 towards Masham. Has a good café and outdoor children’s play area, but equally good for us grownups. Check each ice cream, they are not all GF. I recommend the Black Cherry Whim Wham.
